Lauderdale Lakes sits in the heart of Broward County as a bustling black mecca, fueled by the mass migration of Caribbean immigrants. Hundreds will gather at Vincent Torres Memorial Park for the Unifest. Festival-goers also will observe national Caribbean-American Heritage Month, recently endorsed by Congress. The crowd will reflect the changing demographics in a city that shed its rural ways, became a fiefdom of condo kings, and today is a microcosm of the Caribbean. Unifest, the county’s first Caribbean festival, bloomed from that burgeoning population.
